Sometimes a city isn't just a stop; it becomes the main character of a story. Van is precisely one such place. It's a city where the blue of the lake blends with the majesty of the mountains, where history is etched into stones, and where nature has been generous... On this journey, I didn't just visit Van; I truly felt it. Here's an exploration-filled itinerary covering Van and its surroundings…
A Journey Through History: Van Castle and Old Van City
Dating back to the Urartians, this magnificent structure offers one of the best panoramic views of the city. Watching the sunrise here is an indescribable experience. The ruins of Old Van City at the foot of the castle make you wonder what life was once like here.
You can't leave without visiting the Van Cat House to see the iconic Van cats. These noble creatures, with their striking odd-colored eyes, are one of the region's most special treasures.
In the afternoon, I headed towards Akdamar Island. As you reach the island by boat from Gevaş, the blue of Lake Van soothes your eyes. Akdamar Church captivated me with its stone craftsmanship. The reliefs on the church walls and the frescoes inside bear the traces of the past. Also, Hoşap Castle on the Başkale road greets you like a scene from the movie Kingdom of Heaven.
Muradiye Waterfall and Bahçesaray Road
I start a new day with the magic of nature. A classic Van breakfast is a must. Herb cheese, kavut, cacık, murtuğa, and honey-clotted cream… After a hearty and delicious breakfast, my route turns north towards Muradiye Waterfall.
The powerful flow of the waterfall and the surrounding nature are a true source of peace. Especially in winter, its frozen state offers a unique beauty.
From here, I set off for Bahçesaray, a lesser-known but truly hidden paradise. On the famous Bahçesaray Road, where they say "avalanches fall in winter, rocks fall in spring," passing through steep cliffs can be quite unnerving. But the view that greets me upon arrival is worth everything: green valleys, deep canyons, and pristine air…
Van Erek Mountain Climb: A Journey to a Natural Wonder
Rising in Van's lush geography and always drawing attention with its grandeur, Erek Mountain is a unique destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers. If you're looking for an escape that will rejuvenate both your body and soul, an Erek Mountain climb should definitely be on your list. Here are tips and a travel blog post for an unforgettable Erek Mountain adventure!
Why Erek Mountain?
Erek Mountain not only offers a challenging climbing trail but also captivates with the panoramic Lake Van views from its summit. The villages at the foot of the mountain bear the traces of local life and warm-hearted people. The diverse vegetation, bird sounds, and clean air you'll encounter during the climb are perfect for shedding the stress of city life. Moreover, this nature experience combined with the region's historical and cultural richness offers travelers a comprehensive exploration opportunity.
Preparation Before the Climb
While Erek Mountain isn't a highly technical climb, it does require good preparation.
Equipment: Be sure to bring comfortable hiking shoes, layered clothing (weather can change rapidly), a rain jacket, a backpack, a water bottle, energy-boosting snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and your camera. Especially if you start early in the morning and finish in the afternoon, a headlamp that will ensure your return before dark can also be useful.
Guide: If you are unfamiliar with the region or are climbing for the first time, working with a local guide is crucial for your safety and to better understand the route. Guides can also provide valuable information about the region.
Physical Condition: Make sure you are in good physical condition before starting the climb. You can improve your fitness by regular walks or light runs.
Climbing Route and Experience
Access to Erek Mountain is generally from Van city center. There are different routes starting from the villages at the foot of the mountain. The generally used route is of moderate difficulty, and the duration and difficulty of the climb may vary depending on the chosen starting point.
When you start the climb, you'll first be accompanied by lush trails and occasional small water sources. As the elevation increases, the vegetation changes, and you'll transition to a rockier terrain. With every step, the blue of Lake Van becomes more prominent. As you approach the summit, the wind can intensify, which is where the importance of your layered clothing comes into play.
Upon reaching the summit, that mesmerizing view will greet you, making you forget all your fatigue: the vast blue of Lake Van, the green of the surrounding mountains, and the city skyline in the distance... This moment is the most valuable reward of the entire climb. Here, you can take a short break, enjoy the view, and take plenty of photos.
The return journey is usually easier, but it's important to be careful on the descent. Be careful not to slip on rocky terrain.
The Road to Çaldıran, Tendürek Pass, and Doğubayazıt
As I pass through Tendürek Pass at an altitude of 2,644 meters, the extraordinary texture of the volcanic terrain catches my eye. Here, you truly feel how powerful nature is.
My last stop is Doğubayazıt, very close to Van, and Ishak Pasha Palace. This palace, one of the most magnificent structures of Ottoman architecture, is an aesthetic masterpiece blended with Persian influences. From here, looking at the majestic peak of Mount Ararat, I bid farewell to this fascinating journey.
At the Summit of Tatvan and Nemrut Crater Lake
Another discovery awaits me on the other side of the lake: Tatvan and Nemrut Crater Lake. Setting off early in the morning, as I drive along the shore of Lake Van towards Tatvan, I realize the lake offers a different beauty from every angle.
As I climb towards Mount Nemrut from Tatvan, the road becomes increasingly wild and impressive. Finally, at the point I reach, Nemrut Crater Lake, Turkey's largest crater lake, stands before me in all its glory! The contrast between the blue of the lake and the surrounding volcanic terrain is captivating. Inside the crater, hot and cold lakes, steam vents, and lush nature make you feel like you're on another planet.
After spending some time here, absorbing this unique beauty offered by nature, I start my journey back. I conclude this magnificent trip with a cup of tea overlooking Lake Van in Tatvan and a local delicacy, büryan kebab.
What Remains from Van
Van and its surroundings are not just places to visit; they are a region to be truly felt. The cool breeze of Lake Van, the innocent gaze of its cats, the stone textures imbued with history, and the warm hospitality of its people have left their mark on my memory. And now I know that every traveler's path should one day definitely pass through Van and the summit of Nemrut…
